Joracomposter: Durable and Stylish Tumbling Composter

Composting can be done in many ways, and I tend to have several different kinds of composting systems running simultaneously. Several designs of compost tumblers are out there and they can be pricey.  But I always wanted to try this method, so finally spontaneously bought th two compartment tumbling Joracomposter at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show in spring.  It’s a sleek Swedish design with foam insulation.  Now I’m about to get the first compost ‘harvest’ –

I started out filling the left side only with kitchen scraps 2-3 times per week until it was quite full ~ 3-4 months time. At that point you start filling the right side.  After adding material always give it a few spins (which after all is the fun part.) The manufacturer claims you can put meat scraps in there.  It’s important for the aeration to be often and the moisture to be correct. I do put crushed egg shells and occasional dog or cat food remnants.  The right side is almost filled and still finishing up. The left side is now ready to dump out and use in the garden.

Here’s the unit, just after assembly.  Pretty solid; placed near the kitchen, it’s in a semi shady well-aerated spot.
